Metal Guide

Have you ever wondered what does 24 Kt Gold, 22 Kt Gold, 18 Kt Gold, 14 Kt Gold & 9 Kt Gold mean or what does it stand for & not received a clear answer for the same?

Let us help you there.

These are nothing but different forms of gold which denote the percentage ratio of how much gold is there in that particular form and how much alloy is there.

For Eg: 24 Kt gold is the purest form of Gold having no presence of alloys. (This form is not used to make any kind of Jewellery. If someone claims to do so then you are dealing with the wrong person)

Let us understand the ratios for other forms of Gold as well:

24 karat Gold = 100% or 99.5% Pure Gold (Mostly Gold Coins are in this form)

  • 22 karat Gold = 91.6% Gold & Rest is Alloy - (Widely used in Plain Gold Jewellery, too soft for studded Jewellery)
  • 18k Gold = 75% Gold & Rest is Alloy - (Widely used in studded Jewellery, can be used for Plain gold jewellery as well)
  • 14 karat Gold = 58.5% Gold & Rest is Alloy - (Widely used in studded Jewellery)
  • 9 karat Gold = 37.5% Gold & Rest is Alloy - (Widely used in studded Jewellery)

Understanding these ratios is important as it directly affects the price of a product.

It must be obvious by now that a ring made in 22 kt Gold will be way costlier than the same ring being made in 9 kt Gold.

IMPORTANT NOTE: THIS BASICALLY MAKES IT CLEAR THAT ANY TYPE OF JEWELRY FROM 9 KT UP TO 22 KT HAS SOME PORTION OF GOLD IN IT ALWAYS. SO YOU END UP BUYING GOLD ITSELF AT THE END OF THE DAY, BUT IN VARIED PERCENTAGE

To check the gold purity of a product one should always check the product hallmark.
